have recently written here.  It is a comprehensive history of piano
development, from monochord to concert grand.

"Pianos and Their Makers", by Alfred Dolge, Covina Publishing Co.,
1911 (Original publication).  I have a copy...

George Steck (a piano bears his name) was another early pioneer of
piano development and is credited with the overstrung bass string idea.
Steck also wrote a book about same.

Ref. Chickering and his square grand:  Jonas Chickering began in 1823
in New York, N.Y., according to my Chickering literature.
