Melville Clark Apollo Clutch Problem
By Jerry George

-- forwarded message, please reply to sender and MMD --

Dear Mr. Pebworth, I have a great player piano in need of a small
repair. It is a Meville Clark, Apollo. It has a wind-up spring that
rewinds the roll after playing it. In order for the spring to wind
there is a "clutch" connected to each pump peddle. When a peddle is
depressed the clutch forces the shaft connected to the spring to turn
causing the spring to be tightened.

This system works well on one peddle, but fails on the other peddle.
Eventually the spring runs down and the roll refuses to rewind. To
tighten the spring, the right peddle only has to be pumped. This
causes great anguish to the right leg!

I have opened the "clutch" (I wish I knew what it is called) and have
discovered that there are sets of two pieces of metal that wedge
together to cause enough pressure on the spring shaft forcing it to
turn. In one of the sets, one small piece has worn so that it can't
cause enough friction to turn the shaft. I would like to be able to
replace that small piece of metal or replace the whole clutch. Do you
have this small piece of metal or a "clutch" for a Meville Clark,
Apollo or know where I could get one?

After reading back through this letter, I realize that anyone
reading it could get a great deal of humor out of it. You are probably
laughing now. Oh well, it the best description of the problem that
I could give you. Any help you could give me with this problem,
I would appreciate.

Sincerely yours,

Jerry George
