Ampico in the Movies
By Tom Steuer

Hi, all. I occasionally read with interest film sightings of player
pianos, and it sometimes gives me a chuckle. I've got one for you
all.

Last night I was watching a tape of the 1939 movie "Rose Of Washington
Square", with Alice Faye, Tyrone Power and Al Jolson, in which Power's
character is plugging songs in Tin Pan Alley, and Faye's character is
singing a new hit to Power's playing. This is a Warner Bros. movie set
-- with one of those little booths that we always see in the old movies
about Tin Pan Alley -- and through the window across the street is
apparently a music store. On the top of the store's window is a sign
on glass, TOWER, and just below it is the word, AMPICO.

Makes me wonder whether Tower Records used to be Tower Player Piano
Rolls in the good old days!

Regards,

Tom Steuer
