What is a Recording? What is a Record?
By George Bogatko

Joyce Brite asks, "Is a piano roll a recording? Also, in light
of recent MMD discussions concerning MIDI, should that medium be
categorized as a recording?"

Actually, it is. The copyright office classifies both as
"phonorecords." MIDI only recently received that classification.
They are both subject to the mechanical license rules, same as CD's.
