Shellac for the Soundboard, Varnish for the Case
By John A. Tuttle

Hi All, Was my master craftsman and piano builder wrong? He started
building pianos in 1893.

When I was an apprentice at the Tusting Piano Co., I was told that
all circa-1920 pianos were finished with varnish, not shellac. I was
taught "shellac for the soundboard, varnish for the case".

Musically,

John A. Tuttle
