"Shrine to Music" Museum in Vermillion SD
By Richard Moody

[ George Bogatko inquired about mechanical music in South Dakota. ]

Greetings George and list, I don't know how nearby is 350 miles,
but the Shrine to Music Museum (SMM) is in Vermillion SD, about
six hours from Rapid City. Their Internet site is
http://www.usd.edu/smm/index.html

They have a few "automatic instruments", one being a roll-playing
saxophone which is behind glass so you can't see or hear it play.
There is a large orchestrion in very good condition that is restored
and plays for the public. Unfortunately I cannot find a reference from
the SMM page for details about that. However if you email them I am
sure they will be glad to send you details. Or email me and I can get
specific info from the staff. If you click on their site you can take
a 'virtual tour' which no matter your interest in musical instruments,
I think you will have a lasting impression.
