Ragtimer Johnny Maddox
By Fritz Gellerman

I also was a fan of Johnny Maddox when he was playing in Alexandria,
VA, and have several of his autographed LPs. Besides ragtime he had
a great touch with old-timey waltzes.

One time I asked him to play Roses of Picardy, and he said he didn't
have it in his repertoire, but the next time I came in he would have
it. A few weeks later I asked for it again and he played a great
rendition.

At that time he lived in St. Paul or Minneapolis during the summers.
He said he used to have a Coinola O-roll machine and learned a lot
of his arrangements from them.

I was talking to someone about Johnny recently, probably Dick
Zimmerman, and he said he had visited Johnny who was retired and
living in Arizona, no longer playing.
