Separated Sound Board Ribs
By Mike Blackwell

The Pianista upright piano I'm attempting to restore seems to have some
separation of the ribs from the soundboard in the area of a small crack
in the soundboard. Is this a condition that gets progressively worse,
given relatively stable temperature and humidity?

The piano has recently been brought up to pitch, before I discovered
the problem. It was about a minor third low. While my long term plan
includes attempting to fix the soundboard, I won't have the space and
time to do it for a while. Will it hurt the piano to tune it and play
it, in the meantime?

Thanks,

Mike Blackwell
