I would highly recommend be book, "Understanding Wood Finishing --
How to Select and Apply the Right Finish", by Bob Flexner, Rodale
Press.  The book was published in 1994, I would hope it's still in
print.

'Understanding" is the operative word in this book.  The author sheds
light on many common myths about finishing.
