176-Note Duo-Art Residence Organ Player Wiring
By Pete Knobloch

I have been preparing a short paper that lists the use of the holes
on the Duo-Art 176-note Residence Organ rolls. While doing this
investigation I ran into a problem describing how many notes are wired
from the tracker bar to the Bass Pedal note logic relays. These relays
control the Pedal to upper and the 2nd and 3rd octave functions.

The question is: Are their 13 x 2 (C to C) or just 12 x 2 (C to B)
playing notes wired from the tracker bar? Tim and Jim remember it as
controlling 13 while Bob has indicated it as being 12.

I think that the answer is 12 notes, but this may be wrong. The reason
why I think it is 12 comes from my software that converts a scanned
176-note organ roll. This software separates the bass notes into a
separate MIDI channel that can be viewed with Cakewalk. When I modify
my software to assume 13 notes from the tracker bar, I see two notes
being played at the same time for the bass notes on some of the music
rolls. These two bass notes playing only happens when the lower two
C playing notes (C1 and C2) are made to play at the same time. If I
change my software to only use 12 notes for the pedal, then I never see
two bass notes being played at the same time. If you play and try to
compare the performances between the two file versions, you can't
detect the differences.

When it comes time for me to send this paper to MMD, I would like to
have it as accurate as possible. So it would be good to hear from
those organ people who have had experience in this area. Should I
indicate 12 or 13 for this number in my paper?
