Small Wood Platform Improves Piano Sound
By Paul Murphy

Hey, you never know what other people might find interesting or
helpful. Right? So I'll describe my humble solution to a player
piano problem.

Recently I relocated. I've always had my Steinway upright on
hardwood floors, the way it should be, but the new condo has carpets
everywhere. I don't plan to keep the place long enough to invest in
hardwood floors, and too much tone was being gobbled up by the carpet.
It got so I wasn't enjoying the piano, so I had to do something.

So I went to Home Depot and had a one-inch piece of plywood cut to 3 by
6 feet. Then I bought some one-square-foot pieces of parquet flooring,
glued 18 of them onto the plywood, put the piano on it, and -- well, it
sounds far better!

Maybe the pile won't come back up on the carpet when I'm ready to
retire and go south in three or four years, but by that time I might
have to put down new (cheap) carpet so I can sell the place.

Hope you all have happy holidays.

Paul Murphy
