Determining Ampico "A" or "B" Music Roll
By Roger Anderson

I am putting labels on some Ampico roll boxes and want to use the
appropriate A or B labels. Is there an easy, quick way to tell if the
roll inside is an Ampico A or Ampico B roll?

If I remember correctly, the B mechanism has an extra hole at either
end of the tracker bar which would put a perforation nearer the left or
right edge of the roll. Do these perforations always occur near the
beginning of the roll? If you measure these extra B perforations, how
close to the edge of the roll do they come?

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Roger Anderson

[ I sort mine according to the crescendo perforations. If the long
[ bass and treble crescendo perforations are identical, then the roll
[ will sound okay when played on a "B" Ampico. Otherwise the roll
[ usually sounds better when played with the earlier "A" mechanism.
