Stella Discs Must Be Lubricated Every Playing
By Gary Randall

-- non-subscriber, please reply to sender and MMD --

I have a Stella music box with no broken teeth; it plays fine
and sounds wonderful. It has been cleaned and serviced. I am
getting conflicting information as to taking proper care of the
disc. I was told not to use oil because it can get gummed up
inside. The gentleman who serviced my Stella said just a little
bit of WD40 sprayed underneath the disc is all that is needed.
I am confused as to what I should do.

I have also been told to use only oil on the discs. Do I need
to oil them every time that I play the disc? Could somebody
pass on some good information as to what I should do?

Sincerely,
Gary Randall

[ Musical box restorer Reg Smith wrote in 031115 MMDigest, "I must
[ emphatically state that in the case of _Stella_ music boxes,
[ it is _critically_ important that the discs _must_ be lubricated
[ on the bottom side every time you play them! This was clearly
[ directed by the original makers..."

[ Restorers have lots of experience repairing mistreated
[ instruments, much more experience than most owners have.
[ I would heed the advice of the restorer. -- Robbie
