BBC Programme on Piano Voicing
By Paddy Handscombe

On BBC Radio 4, Thursday, 10 June, 1130 BST (11:30 am):

  "Voicing the Piano

"Giving a piano its voice takes eight years of training and a
lifetime of discovery. This programme follows the small team at
Steinway's technical workshop in London to discover how Jeff Prett,
the renowned 'voicer', gives a piece of wood and metal a distinctive
voice of its own.

"His task is to restore a special piano, a hundred year old rosewood
Steinway model O belonging to Michael Black. The piano was bought
second hand by Mr Black's mother in the 1920s. Now he's planning to
hand it on to his talented granddaughter, but it needs restoring if
it's to last another couple of generations."
