Deformed Spool Flange Causes Tracking Problem
By Jerry F. Bacon

I got a roll yesterday and when I took it out of its box, both spool
ends were broken. I have a collection of cores with spool ends so that
I can respool the rolls with the same kind of spools that they were
manufactured with.

I put the roll on the piano and played it and let it come off the end
so I could respool it, it played just fine. After I respooled it, it
tracked towards the left side of the tracker bar and tracked badly.

After a few tries I examined the _right_ spool flange (the one with the
slot) and found a mistake in the manufacture of that spool that pushed
the roll toward the _left_ side.

So, if you have a roll that tracks toward the left, examine the right
spool flange: it might need to be replaced. This was Bakelite spool
but the same thing might happen with others.

Thought this might be of interest.
