Mechanical Music in Beijing
By Eliyahu Shahar

Hi, It appeared to me that the Emperor and his court enjoyed automatic
music, though I don't believe that anything is still in working order.
When I visited Beijing, I saw several mechanical clocks in the Forbidden
City, and in the Summer Palace I saw a push-up player and a small
orchestrion or barrel piano with accompaniment.

It was hard to tell what it was as it was in a very dark room and it
was forbidden to film or take pictures inside. It was near the theatre
in what appeared to be a stable. Good luck,

Eli Shahar
