Modern Music Played on Antique Machines
By Ingmar Krause

Re: Mechanical Music for Teenagers. Obviously I'm gonna give my
two cents worth on this subject. :-P

While I do understand about the feeling of not wanting "a cover band
organ" (what a term!), I found recognizable tunes to have quite a lot
more effect on getting the initial attention. I've made Metallicas
"Master of Puppets" for our Dutch pierement years back and you should
have seen the reactions!

If only I had more time, then I'd bring all kind of rap-songs onto the
organ. I don't have any problem with that. At that point it might
sound to myself like -- excuse my pun -- "RAPing" the organ, but as
long as just parts of it are recognized, then comes eventually the
turn-around where they give their "props" and show respect. Once that
hurdle is taken and remarks are being made of how "hacked" that all
sounds, that's when you can come in and tell them that these
instruments were made for an entire different era and thus different
music.

I seen a lot of hints that our folks here at MMD are on the right
track: Disney is your friend! Aside from that, there are certain
things that just never die -- amidst them are various pieces by Mozart,
but also Scott Joplin ragtime tunes, and what about the "Star Wars"
theme or "James Bond" theme?

Unless you are playing for military, I doubt that you will have much
success with marches these days. But do not despair -- even rap has
now stayed for as long as it did, the old formula of fashions repeating
about every 20-25 years is still good.

Now, who is going to pay me good money for arranging some rap rolls or
music books? :-P
