Mechanical Music in Beijing
By Don Day

Anyone interested in learning about the remarkable collection of
clocks in the Beijing Palace Museum should read the book "Eastern
Magnificence and European Ingenuity" by Catherine Pagani (Univ.
of Michigan Press, 2001).

Another source of information, although not nearly as comprehensive
and scholarly as the Pagani book, is an article in the National
Association of Watch and Clock Collectors Bulletin vol. 43, #1 (Feb.
2001), which I probably would not have written if I had known the
Pagani book was coming out later that year. The article does have
a lot of color photos, however.

I am also happy to respond to e-mail questions about the Beijing
collection, although the article says pretty much everything I know
about the subject.
