Wood Found in Player Pianos - Sweetgum
By Benjamin Haass

I am pretty sure that red gum is the heart wood of the sweet gum tree.
The sap wood is sold as sap gum. Wood of this tree has very different
coefficients of expansion in the heart and sap wood, so they must be
cut apart at the demarcation and sold as two different woods.
