Barrel Organs by Kitessow of Tbilisi, Georgia
By Christofer Noering

Hello! A couple of times barrel organs made by Nechada of Odessa
have been the matter of discussion on the MMD. Recently I found an
old article by Hans-Jörg Surber in the GSM Journal, "Das Mechanische
Musikinstrument" (No. 93, August, 2005), as well as a hyperlink to an
article by Eka Sakalashvili in the Kaukasische Post (German language)

To keep it short, and for the benefit of non-German speaking MMDers,
Nechada of Odessa had a pupil, Vano Kitessov, who later set up his own
factory in Tiflis/Tbilisi building barrel organs first under the name
of Nechada, later under his own name. In 2005, Vano's great-grandson,
Vaniko Kitessov, had taken over the factory and still was making
Nechada-style barrel organs. According to the article, several organs
had been sold to the USA, to Japan and Germany.

Has anyone heard or seen a modern barrel organ by Kitessow? Is the
firm still active? Please tell us!
