How Does the Ampico Rate as a Reproducing Piano
By Bill Flynt

Mr. Dover, Thanks for your MMD comments about my Ampico roll,
"Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini". Of all the rolls I produced,
way back when, that's my pride and joy.

As for comparisons between the various reproducing systems, Ampico
has it, hands down. From an engineering standpoint, the others would
seem to work in spite of their mechanisms. Ampico's claim to fame is
the logarithmic nature of the 3-bit binary coding, whether on purpose
or accident of design. It enabled me to get those subtle effects,
even without the use of the crescendos.

Careful attention to the sustain pedal coding was another major factor,
and something of a challenge considering the many degrees of pedaling
speed of various Ampico pianos, old and not-so-old.

And how did we get along without MMD!

Best,
