BBC Proms
By Nicholas Simons

The most important aspect of the Promenade Concerts, and that which
gave them their name, is that the main body (stalls) of the concert
hall is relieved of its seating, so that very cheap tickets are sold to
people who stand throughout the concert.

The whole point is that these concerts were started, well over 100
years ago, to enable the less well-off to go to serious music concerts.
