Paper Roll vs. Computer Disk Player Pianos
By Thomas West

I thought I would chime in... From my 34-year experience as a piano
tech and sometimes player tech, the player piano is one of grandest
inventions of man, right up there with steam locomotives. The paper
roll kind offer so many things: interaction with the music via the
music and the sing along (where applicable), aerobics (for the foot
pumpers), camaraderie, the arrangements, etc.

The disk players always seem to be glorified and expensive jukeboxes,
wonderful as they might seem, but rather sterile and impersonal and
most of my clients use the unit just to play music for parties or
"dinner music."

For the kind of money they spent on the instrument they could have
purchased a fabulous music system for their whole house and have an
extensive range of musical options to choose from rather than just piano,
though some do like the piano well enough to listen to a variety of
music arranged primarily for the piano.
