Dancing Ampico Grand
By Eliyahu Shahar

Hi all, I sold my Ampico to a friend a few years ago and he plays it
at least 8-10 times per day, every day. (It's a display in a museum
now.) The last time I visited him, however, I noticed that the piano
was -- I don't know how to describe this -- it moved back and forth
in a rhythmic fashion. It seemed to be dancing with the music!

I replaced the pump with his spare pump and at first it seemed to solve
the problem, but then it started again.

My question is, is this a common phenomenon and what causes it? My
first guess was that the pump was out of balance, but it doesn't make
sense that it would be the same on two pumps. Is it possible that the
motor is causing this? If yes, does he need a new motor?

[ My Ampico grand dances like yours. My tech said it's because the
[ pump is not balanced (and it never was). You should inspect the
[ legs and repair any bad glue joints. -- Robbie
