Roll-Operated Player Pipe Organ Census
By Tom Hutchinson

When this thread first appeared, I began to wonder what the requester
had specified as parameters for inclusion in his roll-playing pipe
organ census. It seemed to me that he mainly got larger organs and a
large number of Aeolians. I personally own a four-rank, no name, 192-
pipe player organ.

It plays 88-note rolls beautifully. I enclosed it in its own room
about five years ago. Its main limitation is the lack of a console.
It has the player unit enclosed in a separate cabinet. Recently I
acquired a 3-rank two-manual roll-playing Wangerin organ, which will be
delivered Monday, October 18, 2010. I will be incorporating the best
of both of these organs into one. The resulting organ will be MIDI-
fied. I point this out because I know of two more similar organs in
St. Louis.

I asked for an opinion on the MMD census from a top expert in this
field and here was his response:

"When I first saw that note in MMD about the roll-playing organs
I had to chuckle. There are thousands of them. At the rate they
are going, they will be making lists till the cows come home."

He's probably right, considering that the four with which I am familiar
are all within a 200-mile radius of Columbia, Missouri. Hope this
helps stimulate further searching.
