I have always used a paste made from dry powdered graphite mixed with
ordinary rubbing alcohol, which is normally 50% to 70% water.  The
alcohol allows the liquid to penetrate the wood slightly faster than
water alone, and it evaporates faster.  I put a bit of paste on the
rubbing surfaces, and slide the pieces together to rub it into the
wood, with just a slight amount of pressure.  When finished, a clean
cloth wipes off the excess, if any.
