Welte-Mignon T-98 "Green" System
By Allen Ford

Hi All, I wish to thank Hans-W. Schmitz for his answer to my question
[130414 MMDigest], but I now am somewhat confused.

My original statement, that I understood the T-98 System could play
96 notes, was based on the tracker bar scale given in a book I have,
"The Marvelous World of Music Machines," by Heinrich Weiss-Stauffacher
with collaboration of Rudolf Bruhin, Kadansha International Ltd.,
First Edition, 1976.

   BASS TREBLE
1 forzando piano (forz. off) 98 forzando piano
2 mezzo forte 97 mezzo forte
3 Sustain pedal 96 soft pedal
4 crescendo 95 crescendo
5 forzando forte (forz. on) 94 forzando forte
6 through 91 playing notes 93 reroll
(from this I inferred 86 playing notes) 92 stop (electric shut off)

Information in parentheses are my additions. The same book also says
that after January 1925, due to a patent of Hupfeld Gebrüder Zimmermann
A.G., Welte soft hammer (hammer rail) was replaced by a key bed shift.

I recognize that the electric shut off can be performed by a finger
operated pallet valve sensing the absence of paper on the take-up
spool, as in some Licensee instruments, allowing the possibility of
97 notes and maybe the two forzando piano functions could be combined
in one hole to yield 88, but all of this is my guess work. I therefore
ask what is the tracker bar scale of the T-98.

Additionally, I thank Robbie for the information on the book by
Messrs. Schmitz and Dangel and I am tempted to purchase it even though
my German is probably too poor to cope with a complete translation.

Again thank you very kindly,

Allen Ford
