String Scales in Mason & Hamlin Ampico Pianos
By Thomas Binnall

While how any piano is scaled certainly can affect it's sound, who
made the new bass wires is also important. Other issues include
bridge placement, soundboard thickness, ring growth of the lumber
used in the board, where the ribs are placed, how many and how stiff,
depending on where they are in the piano's scale. Then we have hammer
hardness, hammer elasticity and where the hammer strikes the string.

What with so many variables, the bottom line is "don't turn a silk
purse into a sow's ear!"
