Fred Benz, Wurlitzer Music Writer
By Matthew Caulfield

In connection with Wurlitzer history, we are looking for information
about Fred Benz, who worked in the 1920s for the Rudolph Wurlitzer
Company, North Tonawanda, New York.

Fred H. Benz was born in Germany in 1874. He lived at 1540 Kingston
Avenue, North Tonawanda, with his wife Mary M. Benz (b. 1881). In 1923
they had moved into one of the four houses on Kingston Avenue newly
built by Wurlitzer. Fred Benz appears in Tonawanda directories from
1923 to 1933, where his occupation is often listed as "music writer."
He died January 13, 1958, in Lockport, New York, after a long illness.

Although his forename is usually shown in records as "Fred," it appears
in his obituary as "Frederick." Having been born in Germany, he was
probably named "Friedrich" but Americanized it as "Fred" after he
immigrated.

Fred's grandson, Paul Benz, was born in 1937 and may still be alive.
Does any MMDer have any contact with, or information about, the Benz
family?
