Ampico Rewind Problem
By Herbert Lindahl

In the 18.05.20 MMD Dave Krall posed a question regarding the AMPICO

rewind problem a friend of his was having. Based on the description,

there are several things to check.

First, the owner needs to make sure that the rewind lever moved all the

way over to rewind. If not, then the port in the transmission will not

be exposed enough possibly to cause the rewind cutout valve near the

pump to not get a strong enough signal to activate the rewind cutout

pouch in the pump. Given that the main use of the piano is to be played

without rolls, it is possible that the bellows cloth on the rewind bellows

may have stiffend enough to cause the lever to get stuck near the halfway

mark.

Second, the rewind cutout primary valve needs to be checked for function.

It's possible it is stuck for some reason. Check tubes to this valve for

kinking. Possible, but less likely, is that the large pouch in the pump

has stiffened to the point it will not close off the large air supply to

the bass and treble stack.
