Laser Burner For Player Piano Rolls
By John Chaplain

I was pleasantly surprised to get several responses to my post regarding

making piano rolls with a laser cutter.

A little more info: I'm using a 2.5 watt laser that I bought on eBay

for $75. The laser burning process won't start fires, but it is possible

to damage your eyesight. So you should wear laser safety glasses at all

times. The laser also creates holes with char at the edges that I am

hoping can be removed with a good brushing-down after making the roll.

.

My machine is partially disassembled at this point as I'm re-doing it to

accept 12"-width paper, but the pictures below should give you a basic

idea of what I'm doing. I find the accuracy of this very inexpensive

CNC machine to be about .002"-.004", which should be accurate enough

for piano rolls, I would think.
