Imhof & Mukle Orchestrion
By Christopher Proudfoot

I can add my ha'penny worth to this discussion. When the late Claes

Friberg sold his collection at Christie's South Kensington in 1981, lot

506 was an Imhof & Mukle barrel orchestrion, which Claes toldme he had

acquired from Imhof's, while they were still in business. So it looks

as if there were two orchestrions, and one did indeed retain its barrel

system. I can't remember who bought it, and do not know its current

whereabouts.

Incidentally, the original Imhof & Mukle company closed, I think about

1912, and Alfred Imhof opened a new business. He died a few years later,

and the business was carried on by his widow for many years, moving to

new premises in New Oxford Street about 1929 (just before the crash,

which must have hurt!). The old address was 547 New Oxford Street, the

new one was 112-116.
