Philipps Pianella Rolls
By Nicholas Simons

If Ed Pither wants good musical arrangements for his Pianella, I would

recommend buying recut rolls from Thomas Jansen or Pascal Schneider.

Both gentlemen copy the best original rolls from Philipps. When these

pianos were popular there were many small outfits arranging and cutting

rolls, the most famous being Eugene DeRoy, manufacturing under the

Symphonia name.

In my experience, very few of these other manufacturers made rolls that

came up to the Philipps standard. Over the years I have bought many

original non-Philipps rolls for my Pianella and most of these I never

play. Of all the non-Philipps roll manufacturers, I would consider

Symphonia to be the worst. Please note that the Symphonia name is now

being used by Marten van der Vlugt in Belgium. My comments do not refer

to his products.
