Unknown Player Piano Roll Of Von Dohnanyi
By Peter Phillips

Dohnanyi recorded for Welte and Ampico, and I believe the MIDI file

mentioned by John Cowles is from Welte-Mignon roll number 494. Dohnanyi

recorded this and other works on September 13, 1905, at the Popper Studios

in Leipzig. At the time, Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies were incredibly

popular, resulting in at least eleven roll recordings of the 13th Rhapsody

being made by eleven different pianists. I wonder though if anyone has

ever heard Oswin Keller's Empeco roll recording of the work. A personal

favourite is Leo Ornstein's Ampico recording of this rhapsody, issued in

1916. But certainly I agree with John that the Dohnanyi Welte-Mignon

recording is excellent.
