This English translation is given only for the convenience of English speaking clients, and tries to be as reliable as possible. Nevertheless, only the French text of the catalogue (with the occasional corrections given during the auction) is conclusive. (Please read the general conditions of the auction on the back of the cover of the French catalogue). If you have any doubts or questions about an item, please ask the auction house before the auction.

A reference is sometimes made to the following books :

Chartres is a beautiful old city, about 1 hour from Paris with a car or by train.
You may visit one of the finest XIIIth century cathedrals in France, with wonderful deep blue stained glass windows ("le bleu de Chartres"). It has been for centuries a well known pilgrimage.

At 2 pm : ca 1500 postcards from the collection of Claude P. Marchal

728.jpg (26 kb)
Nº 728

Introduction to the 65 Lots of Postcards (701 to 765).

Claude P. Marchal (1927-1997) was the son of the founder of the well known "Marchal" company, specialized in car equipment, especially car lights. The logo of the firm was a cat, whose eyes are able to see in darkness : "I lend my eyes only to Marchal" was the publicity of the firm.

Claude Marchal was also a fan of mechanical music. So, in 1976, he founded the AAIMM (Association des Amis des Instruments et de la Musique Mécanique), always prosperous with more than 600 members and a good quarterly journal.

With passion, he collected many instruments, but also postcards depicting organs, organ players and phonographs, many with touches of humour, featuring animals or comic situations. The more than 1500 postcards (of which more than 850 were issued before 1940) we proposed to-day to auction come from his collection.

Systematically, and especially for postcards with animals, he collected various versions of the same postcard (changes in colour, caption language, etc.), from 2 to a maximum of 12 ! but mostly 2, 3 or 4. We only mention these variations when they are over 3 or 4 similar copies.

Excepted in the rare cases where these cards were just stacked in an envelope, they are usually presented four by four, maintained (but easily removed !) by corners on a standard sheet of paper (A4, 21x29,7 cm).

These sheets were piled in special boxes, according to a thematic classification we have respected.

On almost every postcard, he stamped his logo : a green four leaf clover.
- "Modern" cards are usually dated after World War Two.
- "Old" cards were usually issued before 1940, usually at the beginning of the XXth century. Quite a lot of them were actually sent through the post office, and have handwritten correspondence and stamps.

We strongly hope that, in their incredible variety, these postcards will give you as much pleasure as Claude Marchal got himself when collecting them.

Philippe Rouillé

Nº 896 A large 6 interchangeable cylinders musical box on a table Rosewood veneered table with canted corners, with boxwood stringing decoration and a fine inlay of flowers on the lid of the drawer housing the cylinders. Black wooden turned feet with small wheels (fixation of the feet to the table defective). 80x59 cm height. 72 cm. Fine case with canted corners, decoration similar to that of the table. 66x23 cm height 15 cm. Lever wound. Barrel and bridges finely decorated with guilloché. Tune sheet for the six 33 cm cylinders (numbered 55 to 60), bearing 6 tunes each (fine classical program : Rossini, Bellini, Verdi, Gounod, etc.).  Beautiful make, and very good condition. 8 teeth replaced (barely visible). All cylinders are in good condition (excepted 2 tunes on one cylinder). Mandoline effect (by groups of 5). A few damper noises, some small adjustments needed. Good sound.

No maker's mark, but the book "Tune sheets", by A. Bulleid tell us that Grosclaude, Ducommun et S. Troll used this type of tune sheet ca 1875.  From some handwritten papers inside the box, it appears that it was repaired in 1949 for five English Pounds by John Clark, who wrote one of the first books on musical boxes, and that it belonged to Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905), knighted in 1895 by Queen Victoria as being one of the foremost English actors during the XIXe c.

Seems complete and in rather good condition, but needs restoration (bellows, gear of the cylinders).
