Re: "New Reproducing Rolls"
By Marc Sachnoff

Folks:ΒΆ
Thanks for the many replies I recieved both through the list and direct to my
e-mail address concerning my interest in learning of sources of new music
encoded for classic reproducing piano systems.

Robin Pratt and Robbie Rhodes made me aware of a series of Leo Podolsky
Ampico rolls cut by the Chicago Chapter of AMICA. Although I was an AMICA
member for a short time in the 1970s I somehow missed that opportunity -
and I lived in Chicago at the time as well!

I also want to concur with Robin's statement in the recent digest about
buying recut rolls when they are available. I purchased a small number of Don
Rand's Collector's Classics before he left Los Angeles and sure wished I'd
had the foresight and finances to buy the entire catalog. On the other hand I
have also bought my share of rolls that in the catalog "sounded" great, but
on the piano were duds. In fact one piano roll company's well intentioned
early 1980s name artist series was so poorly edited that I returned the whole
bunch.

But the point is well taken and a check to Upright and Grand for a sample
will be forthcoming.

BTW Robin, great work on the current AMICA Bulletin that features Don Rand's
reminiscences and the perforator photos! Those who do not currently belong to
this organization are missing out on a wonderful and significantly revived
publication.

Thanks again to all who responded.
