Terry,
You might want to talk to Bill Koenigsberg, Concord, MA. Bill is
both an MBSI and AMICA member. Bill has done considerable research on
Mason and Hamlin pianos and has determined that the precise wire size
is critical to get proper sound from the piano and that the "sets"
obtained from Schaff and others do not respect the exact original wire
size. I expect he is going to say that you need to find another
Krakauer piano of the same size and within a few serial numbers with
known original strings and measure every string. His work with Mason
and Hamlin has shown that getting the string sizes (including the wrap
size of the wound strings) exactly correct will make a huge difference
in the sound of the piano. I am sure he would be happy to discuss his
research with you. I'm sorry, I don't know whether he has an online
logon or not. Being a research scientist by trade I would be surprised
if he didn't have access to the internet. Hope this helps.
