Re: Fish Glue
By Terry Macham

I have recently been using Fish Glue instead of hot hide glue for piano
damper replacements. I have found it to be easy to work with and
extremely effective. I doubt that I will use hide glue again for this
type of work.

There is little or no smell. Definitely no fish smell.

"High Tack Fish Glue" is available in Canada from Lee Valley Tools.
Outlets are located in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, London, Toronto,
and Ottawa. Phone number is 596-0350 (Ottawa) or 1-800-267-8767. I am
not sure if their toll free number works outside of Canada. Lee Valley
Tools mailing address is:

    Lee Valley Tools
    PO Box 6295
    Stn J
    Ottawa, ON K2A1T4
    Canada

Prices in their 94/95 catalog are 18ml - $2.95, 500ml - $8.50, 1L - $14.95.

The following notes are taken from the glue bottle.

"Application: Ideal for antique restoration and intrument-making
because it has a long open time and is reversible. Can be used on
glass, ceramics, metal, wood, cork, paper, and leather. It is very
sandable and resists solvents; the cured glue line has low water
resistance.

Directions: Ready to use. Apply with roller or brush. Fish glue is
tacky in one minute at room temperature. Re-moisten with water to
restore initial tack. Open time is 1 to 1 1/2 hours. clamp time is 12
hours. Shear strength 3200 psi. Cleans up with water.

Contents: about 45% solids in water; extract from cod fish skins,
non-flammable natural protein. Contains an odourant and a bactericide.

Safety: This product is not considered hazardous. If ingested give
plenty of water, do not induce vomiting, contact physician.

Shelf Life: two years"
