John, yes, you are correct that I overlap repair tape and slice off the
excess with a steel rule and X-Acto knife.  I agree that care has to be
taken not to overdo it. A shortcoming does emerge from this process in
that the base board becomes progressively damaged from the knife edge
cuts and needs to be replaced. I'm wondering if anyone has found a more
durable cutting surface that can better withstand repeated cuts from the
X-Acto knife.

Any chance that photos of your roll repair device might be made available
as an on-line graphic?  If you don't have access to a scanner, perhaps
you can mail photos to me and I'll scan them for all.
