With a roll-repair table repairing even very damaged rolls is quite
easy.  The most important thing is to use Neschen filmoplast P; both
the tape and the adhesive are archival and this tape is very much
thinner than Scotch Magic tape.  For repairing the edge of the roll
I save money and cut the filmoplast P tape down from 20 mm to 5 mm and
then trim off the small amount which overhangs the paper after repair.

When the side is beyond repair I cut in standard kraft paper available
from large stationary stores.  I find using flat sheets easier than
using kraft paper from a roll as it is difficult to stop the rolled
kind from curling back up.

I cut a strip slightly wider that what is needed, ensuring that one
edge is perfectly straight; this is the edge which I line up with the
edge of the roll.  I weight down the replacement kraft paper and the
existing roll with long steel rulers and then cut through _both_ the
new and old paper together.

After taking away the excess from both new and old paper I am left with
a perfectly aligned butt join; all that is required is to apply my 5 mm
wide strip of filmoplast P.  The roll then plays perfectly without any
crinkling or buckling.

For repairing large tears on the leader and around the tab I usually
use the full 20 mm width of the filmoplast P.
