Rewinding Electric Motors
By Craig Brougher

After changing motor shops, due to a retirement of my old favorite shop
in town, I asked my new winder if he could double the power of the
reproducer motors when he rewound them, just like my old A&B Electric Co.
used to do. He said he didn't know how to do that.

I suspect that if they were to leave the field coils the same size but
double the cross-sectional area of the wire turns, thus doubling the
amperage, you'd just about have it. I can't find any problem with this
idea, but I'm not a motor man. I'd like to know if anybody has either
done this or knows how to do it. I also would ask about the start
winding, too. Should this remain about the same, or use larger wire,
also?

This is a very handy thing to know when doing large grands, since it
requires increasing the power. I was able to double the speed of the
pump on one concert Ampico, and after several hours of playing, that
motor was only warm, not even as hot as they run normally. So while one
is having a motor rewound anyway, one might as well double their power.
It doesn't cost any more, and that motor will run as cool as a cucumber.
They have a lot more iron in them than any equally sized modern motor, so
it would seem that their flux density/saturation margins would not be a
problem. Does anybody know what to do, here?
