I have a question about the motor which was rewound to work at 230
volts 50 Hz.  Unless the motor was in poor condition, or there was a
strict requirement for total authenticity, would a 120v/230v step-up
transformer have worked as well?  I'm fairly certain, but I'm not sure,
that a fractional-horsepower induction motor like this would work
properly through a transformer whose power rating is a bit higher than
that of the motor.

This isn't any sort of criticism of the alternative taken here, just a
bit of curiosity that might prove helpful in the future.  The price for
motor rewinding jobs around here is truly majestic.
