Alexander's Bagpipe Band
By Peter Neilson

Ragtime, and even the word "ragtime", was not necessarily for polite
ears in the ragtime era. I have a roll of Pickles and Peppers, a rag by
one of the young ladies who wrote ragtime (I've forgotten her name, and
cannot see the roll right now), and the label on the roll says, "March
and Two Step". She wrote and played ragtime, but no one called it that,
I guess. I think that "bagpipe" is a euphemism.
