Baldwin ConcertMaster / Boesendorfer SE
By Rob DeLand

I had heard that the Baldwin ConcertMaster was in the works.
Apparently it is similar to QRS' PianoMation system. The web page
shows the controls, and the remote looks quite sharp! BTW, the URL is
slightly different from what was on MMD on 980911. The correction is:

    http://www.baldwinpiano.com/products/current/concertmaster/concertmaster.htm

On a related note, I attended a concert by Dick Hyman last night in
Woodstock, IL. I had Dick autograph a copy of his latest CD, which
is another in the series recorded on the Boesendorfer SE system by
Reference Recordings. Hyman's previous recordings of Waller and Duke
Ellington material were outstanding, and so is this new one. Anyway,
the liner notes included this interesting comment:

"Hyman's recital, which took place November 22, 1997, was recorded at
that time utilizing the reproducing capability of the piano, one of
only thirty-three manufactured with ...[the SE] mechanism developed by
   Wayne Stahnke."

I always wondered how many Boesendorfer SE pianos were made, and
apparently now we know. This latest CD was then recorded in a studio
on June 8, 1998 with the SE piano playing back the files recorded the
previous November. For Robbie's benefit, I mention this comment about
his friend, also in the CD liner notes: "Special thanks to Jim Turner,
Boesendorfer SE Expert Extraordinaire."

At the risk of throwing too many topics in one email, I wonder if
there's any chance Wayne might issue this latest recording on his Live
Performances Disklavier disk series? Wayne has issued the Waller and
Ellington disks already, and they're outstanding (as expected). BTW,
I also had Dick autograph the Live Performances disk liner card. I
asked, and he admitted that doesn't happen often!

Cheers,
Rob

[ Gack! Another Kravitz typo in a URL! I guess I should fix that
[ one in the MMD Archives too.. Unfortunately a lot of URLs change
[ with time as people rearrange their websites... I'm not sure what
[ to do about URLS in older articles getting stale... -- Jody
