Joe Schumacher is Improving
By Rick Cooley

Hi gang, There are so many folks in AMICA and the MBSI that know
Joe Schumacher that by far the quickest way to pass along information
is by the MMD. Thanks, Jody.

For those who have not yet heard, Joe Schumacher of Wilmington,
Delaware, suffered a severe stroke on Friday morning, October 30th.
Most of Joe's friends don't know but this is his second stroke in about
12 months. Fortunately, the first one was rather mild and all effects
were gone within 3 months. However, this one was very severe.

Betty (my wife) and I visited him tonight and are glad to report that
he is much improved. He can now slur a few words and is much more
alert. He specifically asked (through his wife who seems to sense
what he is saying) to thank the many, many folks who have sent e-mail
messages to him at our address, <cotps@aol.com>. He received 25
e-mails just yesterday and he personally read each one. He had to
study each note carefully before he understood but that is real
progress in just a few days.

Joe will require a very extended rehabilitation. He will spend the
next four weeks in the St. Francis Hospital (address below) and will
then will be transferred to a rehabilitation center near his home.
There he will undergo physical and voice therapy for up to six months.
At this point (6 days after his stroke), he is still paralyzed on his
right side and cannot speak without mumbling and rambling. He
continues to need your prayers.

It will likely be a long recovery but I am now convinced that he will
make it. He would love to hear from his many friends during his long
convalescence. For the next month, you can send cards, etc., to:

  Mr. Joseph Schumacher
  St. Francis Hospital
  7th and Clayton Street
  Wilmington, Delaware 19808

Although he may be in Room 635 for the next four weeks, it may be best
to leave off the room number. I am sure that Joe would love to hear
directly from you during his long recovery. Also, you may continue to
send messages to me, Rick Cooley, at <cotps@aol.com> and he will have
them within 12 hours of their arrival.

Regards to all,

Rick and Betty Cooley
