Rewind-Repeat Device on Stoddard Ampico
By Mike Kitner

Hi; several folks asked what I could say about the lead-screw rewind
and repeat system in the Stoddard Ampico. By the way, they used this
in both grands and uprights. Here's what I see.

The feed spool chuck drives a very fine-pitch lead screw via a ladder
chain. A follower runs back and forth on the lead screw depending on
which direction the feed spool is turning. There are two clutch knobs
on the device marked "rewind" and "repeat". While the roll is playing,
if you tighten the "repeat" knob, the follower will trip a pallet valve
and cause the roll to rewind.

While rewinding, if you tighten the "repeat" knob another pallet is
tripped to put the system back into play. Thus by setting the two
knobs you can cause the roll to repeat a desired section over and over
again. If you leave both knobs loose, the roll will play to the end
and rewind when the "rewind" hole passes over the trackerbar. When the
paper comes off the take-up spool the electric switch is tripped off.

I guess I still don't understand why you'd want to repeat a section of
a roll. Its a nice idea but the little device to do it certainly was
not easy to make. Perhaps it was intended for educational purposes.
Anyone else have any ideas on that?
