Proposal for Shortened Ampico Roll Numbers
By Richard Stibbons

Much as I welcome any suggestion which simplifies roll cataloguing,
the proposal to shorten Ampico roll numbers will cause immediate
problems to those of us who handle many types of roll.

There are already several examples of different types of roll which
share the same number. Dropping the final Ampico digit would immedi-
ately result in a high proportion of clashes with the Duo-Art numbering
system. My own solution is to prefix every roll number with a single
letter identifying the roll type - A for Ampico, D for Duo-Art, R for
Recordo etc. This also greatly simplifies the management of the
catalogue database.
