Preserving Old Decals
By Bob Klepner

A friend has recently acquired a 1920s 'Horserace Piano' by Mills
Novelty Company. This instrument has decals on the glass and he would
like to know how to preserve these decals, which he feels may otherwise
be in danger of flaking off, etc. Can anyone help with any experience
with decals similarly at risk.

Fortunately these decals are on the inside of the glass so an easy way
I suggested to prevent any further deterioration would be to back the
piece of glass with another sheet of glass and in this way to sandwich
the decals between them. This would at least stop any loss or deterior-
ation until something better could be done. This at least has the
virtue of being reversible.

But I'm hoping someone has dealt with this problem before, perhaps with
decals on the front of timber where the above solution would not be
possible. Possibly someone has come up with a solution to preserve the
silk screened graphics on pinball back glasses which are similarly at
risk? Any advice would be appreciated.
