Dance Halls with Organs in French Flanders
By Philippe Rouillé

In addition to the posting of Francoise Dussour (MMD 990209), here are
some further details (you will find the address too on the web page
Musica Mecanica):

> Cafe Au Palais des Orgues Mortier (Albert Amelot)
> F-59470 Herzeele
> Tel. +33 (0)3 28 27 63 02
> (dimanche/Sunday/Sonntag a partir de/from/ab 16h)

Or by appointment (for groups only). Closed only three weeks in
January.

Three splendid Mortier Organs with magnificent decorated fronts more
than 20 feet wide (and up to 18 feet high !) :

 - 81 keys (1912)
 - 90 keys (1926)
 - 101 keys (1939)

plus the remnants of another old organ (beautiful decoration, too).

The Dance Hall is huge and can accommodate hundreds of people.

On Sundays, from 4 PM to 8 PM (it is opened till 10), every kind of
people is dancing with the music of the organs as in a Dutch Brueghel
picture : young, old, rich and poor, beautiful or ugly, local (mainly)
or tourists, by two, four or more, sometimes with farandoles ...

Serves beer, fruit juices, and some chips and sausages. A must, if you
visit North of France ! (a few miles from Dunkerque).

Last year, I was asked to write a complete description of these Mortier
organs. It will be published with a few photos within a few months in
an official book (Inventaire des Orgues de Flandre, mainly church
organs). There have been many radio and TV broadcasts about that place,
as well as articles in various papers and magazines. I should probably
write something for the AAIMM when the above mentioned book will be
published. I shall keep you informed.

Best regards,
