Pop Songs Played On Church Organs
By Julian Burke

Hello MMDers, The posting of "Razz-Ma-Tazz In Hi-Fi" reminds me
of a record I bought in the late 60's. It is packed away somewhere
so I will have to rely on memory here.

I was in high school then working for a music store selling high-end
stereo equipment and of course, records. I was totally into theater
pipe organ then and seemed to want every pipe organ record I could
afford. London "Phase 4" records were the "elite" records of the day
and were high quality.

One such was "The Kingsway Hall Organ", playing pop hits of the day.
I forgot the details of its location, but it was an organ more
suitable for Bach. You haven't lived until you hear "The Girl from
Ipanema". (Is that how it is spelled? I forgot that too!) And others
as well!

It is so horrible that I used it on a radio show some years back
discussing the differences between theater and church pipe organs.
Using it as an example of why there was a need for a theater pipe
organ, it WAS a perfect example of why you don't really want to play
pop tunes on a large organ full of strings! So I commit it to the
class of "Records that should have never been made".

Any others? Your pipe organ friend,

Julian Burke
